Suzy Marshall – San Diego, CA

Our Club Member of the Week this week is- Suzy Marshall ! Everyone say hi to Suzy ! I hope you will enjoy getting to know her a little better!

Your Name:  Suzy Marshall

At what age did you start sewing/quilting?  About 10 years old. I also began embroidering at the age of 8.

What is your most favorite project you ever made and why?  My Magnolia Blossom Quilt.  Because I love how I did the border.

Who or what inspired you to become a quilter?  My Mother inspired me to become a quilter.  She taught me how to sew at an early age.  Later in her fifties she was diagnosed with Cancer.  She had begun making an embroidery patchwork quilt by hand and asked me to finish it and give it to my niece as a wedding gift.  That’s when I began taking quilting classes.  I don’t enjoy hand piecing or hand quilting.  So, all my work was done by machine.

What color do you have a hard time using in your quilts and why?  Just about any color!  There are so may shades and hues of colors and trying to find just the right one that will work/pop with the other can be very difficult for me. I have more blue fabrics in my stash than any other color!

What color seems to always make its way into your quilts?  Blue

Do you do other types of sewing besides quilting? (Clothing, home décor, etc.)  Oh yes!  Aprons, clothing, home décor, and all kinds of hand embroidery and a bit of machine embroidery.

Do you have other creative hobbies? (cooking, knitting, painting, gardening….) I enjoy cooking and working in my garden.  But if I have a “special” gift I’m working on, then all of that has to wait until the project is finished.  Fortunately, my husband likes to cook, too! ♥

If you won a shopping spree to a quilt store, what is the first thing you would splurge on?  I would love to purchase a long arm quilting machine.  But… I don’t have room for one.  So, I most likely would purchase a new sewing machine.

Did you name your sewing machine?  No.

Favorite sewing gadget?  My favorite sewing gadgets are: FriXion Pens, my Stiletto, and Tweezers

What treats do you indulge in while working in your sewing room? Pretzel Chips and sliced apples.  Occasionally a handful on M & M’s.

What’s your oldest UFO? It’s probably 10 years old!

Your best sewing tip:  Don’t waste time on “small” mistakes.  On a galloping horse, no one will ever notice!

What is your favorite technique (hand embroidery, hand applique, machine applique, etc.)  Oh, that’s a hard one.  I like both machine applique and hand embroidery

What type of quilt or block is on your “bucket list” and why?  Mariner’s Star.  Because I have never done one.

Tell us about your family (children, grandchildren, fur babies, etc.)   I have been married nearly 50 years to my BEST friend.  We have no children.  But I do have 2 sisters and so does my husband.  I have made numerous gifts for all of them as well as for their children and grandchildren.  I have 2 cats, Sam & Gracie.  They are 8 years old and my constant companions whether I am in my sewing room or in my chair at night doing needlework.

Where do you live, and what is your favorite thing about where you live?  I live in Paradise…  San Diego, California.  I love the ocean and the cooler climate.

Favorite vacation spot?  Bavaria!  We were blessed to have lived in Germany for three years and we always enjoyed our trips/vacations to Bavaria.

Favorite food?  Avocados and Artichokes

Favorite television show?  Midsummer Murders and the Hallmark channel

If someone made a movie about your life, who would play you?  Joanne Woodward! Or Doris Day… or Angela Lansbury.

Are you a rightie or leftie?   “Rightie”
